Try your hand at Tamba ware pottery, one of Japan’s most historic ceramic traditions.
Tamba ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, traces its origins back to the late 12th century, making it one of the oldest pottery styles in Japan. In 2017, it was officially designated as a Japanese Heritage by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
Tamba ware is known for its versatility, with its uses evolving to suit everyday life from the medieval through early modern periods. During the Edo period (1603–1868), Tamba ware was used for storing rice and water; in the Meiji period (1868–1912), for sake and soy sauce bottles; and in the Showa period (1926–1989), for flower pots. Each era shaped its production to meet changing needs. Tamba ware is known for its natural glaze, which forms without artificial coatings, creating uniquely beautiful colors. Admired both for practical use and artistic value, it continues to be cherished today. We hope the piece you create during your experience will become a memorable keepsake.
